Grant - Workplace Violence Prevention Training for the Construction Industry
OR-OSHA awarded a grant to CICP to develop a research and training program to address its concerns about workplace violence. The project, "Preventing Workplace Violence in the Construction Industry" was designed and implemented by Toni Partington, CICP Education and Training Coordinator and Karen Blythe, Executive Director. Training was provided to over 350 industry managers, supervisors, employees, vendors and partners.
The project was a successful collaboration between CICP, the construction industry and law enforcement. Our shared goal was to examine the construction workplace for the potential of violent incidents and to develop prevention strategies that could be easily implemented. The strategies were based on a workplace safety model and included practices to increase the awareness of workers, employers and community members, and to directly address site access issues. We found correlations between construction crimes and the potential for physical incidents leading to assault and injury. Time spent with trades workers to review attitudes and prevention strategies certainly paid off. The corresponding evaluations indicated the training was timely and relevant to growing concerns about workplace safety, employee training and site security within the industry
The training material consists of a manual, CD-ROM and handouts. They can be borrowed through the OSHA library. Members of CICP may borrow them directly from the CICP office
